Corneal Transplant
Corneal Transplants
Corneal transplants, also known as keratoplasty or corneal graft, are done to replace damaged tissue on the surface of your eye (the cornea). The procedure replaces your corneal tissue damaged from disease or injury with a new cornea received from a local eye bank.
- What conditions may require corneal transplants?
-
Corneal transplants can be done for any number of reasons. The most common conditions include:
- Scarring from infection or injury
- Corneal failure after another eye surgery
- Keratoconus (curving of the cornea)
- Excessive swelling (edema) on the cornea
- Corneal cloudiness that causes vision loss (Fuchs dystrophy)
Corneal transplants are generally done to protect your inner eye and to improve your vision. The procedure is not right for everyone and should be done by a highly qualified ophthalmologist that specializes in corneal surgery.
